Last year David Fincher directed The Social Network, an oscar nominated movie about the invention of Facebook. Many movie-goers scoffed at the thought of such a plot…but then they saw the actual film and saw that it was a brilliantly directed (it IS Fincher after all), fantastically acted and thoroughly entertaining piece of cinema. It was so good, that it made it into the “number 2” spot on my “Top Ten Films of 2010” list.
Well now it seems there is another “invention” film that may just require us to use “benefit of the doubt”. This time, however, it is the invention of something completely different. Tanya Wexler’s Hysteria tells of the invention of the “vibrator”. Yes…THAT vibrator. Specifically, it tells the story of Victorian doctor Joseph Mortimer Granville’s invention of a device to cure women’s hysteria. The film stars Jonathan Pryce and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
